Caucasian Chalk Circle School Edition

Forced into exile in the Georgian Caucasus Mountains, Grusha, the Governor’s maid, pretends her employer’s baby is her own after his father is beheaded in a coup. But the new rulers are overthrown, and Grusha learns she must return the child she loves to his cruel, uncaring mother, who desires to claim his extensive inheritance for herself. In court, as a judge draws a circle around the boy knowing only the true mother would be able to pull him out, he metaphorically encircles a society misdirected in its priorities. In The Caucasian Chalk Circle Bertolt Brecht makes stark statements about class, cloaked in the innocence of a tale of love and motherhood.
